When This Santa Clarita Personal Trainer Get Bored At The Gym This Is What He Does

Leg machines, butt machines, inner thigh machines, ab machines. Machines to run on, machines that are low-impact, machines you climb on. Dumbbells, barbells and those bouncy balancy things in the corner. Not to mention dancy, kicky-punchy, shake your thing classes.

All inside of a big gigantic box that lucky you, get access to by swiping your piece of plastic as you walk by the indifferent 15 year old at the front desk.

Welcome to THE GYM.

There’s a ton of shiny stuff in that big box. But what happens when you get bored? Trust me it’s gonna happen at some point, it happens to me all the time.

Here are some of my favorite ways to mix it up and fight workout boredom.

Move some furniture

Bed Bath & Beyond sells these things called EZ Sliders. They’re used to make moving furniture easier. The plus side is that they make for a really cool piece of exercise equipment AND they won’t break the bank.

Let it hang

The story here is that a Special Operations soldier cobbled together some towing straps so he could have something to exercise with while on missions. What he came up with is now sold as a TRX Suspension Trainer.

Suspension trainers kick butt because they force you to build core stability while allowing you to turn conventional exercises on their ear and work your muscles and burn fat like crazy.

You can buy a TRX at www.FitnessAnywhere.com for around $200. I personally didn’t feel like shelling out 200 bucks so I went to Home Depot and bought the materials I needed to make my own suspension trainer for under $50.

Start a fire

Supersets have been around forever. What you’re going to do is called a Metabolic Superset. This is 2 exercises paired together. In this case the exercises are for the same movement–pushing.

You’ll do a heavier exercise like a stability ball chest ¬†press then follow that immediately with a lighter and higher velocity exercise like chest tap pushups.

This type of circuit is a killer because it fries your pushing muscles and jacks your heart rate up. You build fat burning muscle and do fat burning cardio at the same time which results in…your metabolism going through the roof.

Get dense

Alright, here’s the deal. Many people are used to 3 or 4 sets of an exercise and then they’re done–right?

Well, your body adapts to the 3-4 set scheme and going up to 10 sets is a heck of a shock to the system. One of my favorite ways of doing this is working out in 10 minute rounds. You give yourself 10 minutes to do 3 exercises, say, squat press, kettlebell swings, and medicine ball slams at 10 reps each.

Your goal is to do all 3 moves for 10 reps each as many times as you can in 10 minutes. If you really crank it you’ll be doing all 3 exercises every minute.

You get a lot of density in this type of workout. How does 300 total reps sound? You get the benefits of strength training and cardio because you’re moving like you’re hooked up to an espresso I.V.

One final thing with this. If you get 10 rounds of this easily in the 10 minutes your weights were too light. If you are dying by 5 rounds you might have forgotten to check your ego at the door and gone with really heavy weights. Find something in between.

Trust me there are a ton of things you can do so you don’t get bored at the gym but you’ve just seen some of the things I’m doing right now.

You might feel like you haven’t got a clue when you try this stuff but that’s what makes it exciting. Keep at it and go hard.
